BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (WNDU) – The principal and assistant principal at Benton Harbor Charter School Academy have been charged in connection with a chair throwing incident at the school.

Principal Timothy Harris, 48, and Assistant Principal Ashley Smith, 35, both of Benton Harbor, were charged with misdemeanor failure to report child abuse, the Berrien County prosecutor confirmed to our reporting partners at The Herald-Palladium Wednesday.

The charges come in connection with an incident early in November in which 49-year-old art teacher Thomas Barnes allegedly threw a chair while students in his class were being rowdy, reportedly hitting one student.

Barnes was fired because of the incident and charged with felony assault with a dangerous weapon.
