Both the attorney general and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services want to warn people about phone scammers posing as public health officials.

Several county health departments have received reports from residents about calls seeking personal information that could be used to steal identities.

The callers usually claim to be from your local health department or Medicare, but officials remind you that neither will ever request account info, your Social Security number or passwords over the phone.

If you'd like to report a scam, call the attorney general's Consumer Protection Division at 877-765-8388.
