ELKHART, Ind. (WNDU) - The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is investigating a shooting on Valentine's Lane on Valentine's Day.
The shooting happened at around 5:30 a.m. at Holiday Mobile Home Park. One man was shot in the abdomen and taken to the hospital, police said.
No arrests have been made. Detectives canvassed the area and spoke to potential witnesses.
One neighbor says he heard a scream followed by several gunshots. He then looked out his window and saw someone running down Labor Day Lane, which is one street over from Valentine’s Lane.
Another resident thought he heard something early in the morning and didn’t realize a shooting had happened just a few houses down from his home until after he arrived at work.
"When I did find out about it, the first thing I did was call my wife to make sure that she was OK, because her and some of my children were still home, so I wanted to make sure that everything was OK with them and I was glad that everything was OK," resident Chase Roberts said. "I was as little worried that something like this happened. It’s never a good thing that it happened, but especially being this close to home."
Police and neighbors alike were baffled by the strangeness of the incident happening on Valentine’s Lane on Valentine’s Day.
"That was a little odd one to get in the morning," said Lt. Travis Snider with the Elkhart Police Department. "I was still half asleep, and when they said the location, I was confused for a minute because I knew it was Valentine’s Day. That’s a really weird coincidence."
But now, the focus is on finding the suspect and hoping the best for the victim.
"I hope that they find the person responsible and I also hope that the person who got injured is OK and makes a recovery," Roberts said.
The Elkhart County Prosecutor's Office says the victim is doing better and is in stable condition.
