ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) - A woman is suffering from serious injuries after being hit by a school bus Monday morning in Mishawaka.
It happened at Ireland Road and Bremen Highway.
At around 8:30 a.m., a Penn-Harris-Madison bus hit a 62-year-old woman while she was crossing the road. She has been identified as Joanne Hibner.
She is in serious but stable condition and is undergoing surgery at Memorial Hospital.
The Fatal Alcohol Crash Team (FACT) is investigating because of the nature of the collision and injuries involved, but they are treating this as an accident investigation, not a crime investigation.
FACT says the 56-year-old bus driver didn't see Hibner as she was crossing Ireland. The bus driver reportedly has been cooperating with the investigation.
The bus had 25 children from Grissom Middle School on board at the time of the accident, but nobody on the bus was injured. All of the students were taken to school.
The woman who was hit seems to be a regular in this area. Many people NewsCenter 16 talked with said they knew her and see her walking around on a daily basis.
"A lot of people give her rides. She's a very nice lady, she's an angel," explained Starla Graym a cashier at a nearby gas station. "She walks with a cane and stuff like that, and it was just terrible. I mean, I felt sorry for the kids on the bus also, because they have to see that."
