UPDATE: 3 dead, including gunman, identified in Elkhart apartment shooting

ELKHART, Ind. (WNDU) - Three people are dead, including the alleged suspect, after a shooting at the Stratford Commons apartment complex in Elkhart.

It happened around 9 a.m. Wednesday at Stratford Commons, which is located near the corner of Hively and Oakland avenues.

Elkhart Police Chief Chris Snyder identified the two victims killed in the shooting as 66-year-old Jon Malk and 66-year-old Gail Shield.

Snyder identified the gunman who was also found dead at the scene as 76-year-old Lawrence Faso.

The initial call was for a woman who was shot. She is being treated for serious injuries. That victim is the only one who has yet to be publicly identified.

Snyder said it appears to be a murder-suicide, but a potential motive for the crime remains unclear.

At least 100 Elkhart police officers responded to the scene to help search the apartment units.

"It's tragic," Chief Chris Snyder said. "No community should have to go through this."

A resident 16 News Now talked with says the complex is for seniors or those with disabilities.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is now leading the investigation.
