One young man is dead after an apparent accidental shooting in Elkhart County.

Several officers responded to reports of gunshots fired in the 29000 block of San Lu Rae Drive in Baugo Township just before noon.

“Especially during the holiday season, it's a time when you want to celebrate,” Elkhart County sheriff’s department captain Jim Bradberry said.

Tragedy on a quiet street two days before Christmas.

“When these things happen, it really makes you pause to think about what's important,” Capt. Bradberry said.

Just before lunch time Friday, Elkhart County sheriff's deputies were called to San Lu Rae Drive where they say 13-year-old Devon Sullivan had been shot in a gun accident.

“He was transported to the hospital for his injuries. Unfortunately, he died at the hospital,” Capt. Bradberry said.

With a decorated tree that's now a crime scene, one family's holiday will never be the same.

“We do offer our condolences to the family. We'll do our part as law enforcement in this situation to do what we can to make sure that the investigation goes as it should,” Capt. Bradberry said.

Sheriff's department detectives haven't said if they plan to charge anybody related to the incident.
