Multiple police departments were called Monday morning to investigate the report of a gun on a Plymouth school bus.

It started when a student told an adult supervisor that a gun was seen in an unknown student's backpack.

Indiana State Police and the Plymouth Police Department were called in to assist in identifying the student.

The gun, which turned out to be a plastic toy, was found in a trashcan on a bus, and the student was identified.

"As we continue to keep students’ safety a top priority, we appreciate the response of the Plymouth Police Department, Indiana State Police, Plymouth Community School Corporation Safety and Security, and the student who reported what was believed to be suspicious activity," the Plymouth Community School Corporation said in a statement.

Parents were notified about the situation through the school corporation's email messaging system. (An earlier release from the school corporation incorrectly stated that parents were notified via voicemail.)
