NOGALES, Ariz. (CNN) - South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg took a jab at Vice President Mike Pence over his opposition to gay rights earlier this week.

The Army veteran said Pence's issue is not with him, it's with his Creator.

Friday morning, Pence spoke to CNN about the comment, saying he doesn't have a problem with Buttigieg.

"I've known Mayor Pete for many years," Pence said. "We've worked very closely together when I was governor, and I considered him a friend, and he knows I don't have a problem with him. I don't believe in discrimination against anybody. I treat everybody the way that I want to be treated."

Pence went on to say Buttigieg should reflect on the importance of respecting freedom of religion for every American.
