Woman dies after being hit while leaving U.S. 12 garage sale

CASS COUNTY, Mich. (WNDU) A 78-year-old South Bend woman has died from her injuries after being hit by a vehicle Friday morning.

Investigators believe Carole Ann Martin had just made a stop along the U.S. 12 Heritage Trail Garage Sale and was walking back to her car when she was hit.

It happened at 9:40 a.m. Friday on U.S. 12 near Bell Road in Cass County.

The driver of the vehicle stayed on the scene and waited for police.

Martin was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital with head, arm and internal injuries. She died while being treated.

Police have not said whether the driver will be charged.

Michigan State Police urge attendees of the US 12 garage sale to use extreme caution. They want to remind pedestrians to look both ways before crossing the road.

They say pedestrians should also be aware that vehicular traffic has the right of way on U.S. 12. Attendees should make sure their vehicles are legally parked on the side of the road.

According to Michigan State Police, troopers will be enforcing parking laws on U.S. 12.
