One person is dead after he and his friend fell into Lake Michigan near the Michigan City Lighthouse.

It happened near the breakwall around 7:30 p.m. Friday evening.

Indiana Conservation Officers have identified 22-year-old John Hammons, of LaPorte and 20-year-old Slater Harkleroad, of Union Mills, as the two young males who fell into the water.

Hammons and Harkleroad were walking on the breakwall when they both fell into the water after being knocked over by waves approximately 10-15 feet high.

Hammons was able to swim back to the breakwall and tried to throw a life ring out to rescue his friend, but Harkleroad did not resurface.

Hammons was treated and released from the scene.

Harkleroad was eventually rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard and was taken to Franciscan Health Hospital in Michigan City where he was later pronounced dead.
