A Notre Dame graduate student has been charged with distributing and possessing child pornography.

Yuzhang Cui, 26, is charged with one count of child exploitation, a level 5 felony, and two counts of possession of child pornography, a level 6 felony.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Eric Tamashasky of the St. Joseph County Police Department was able to download files containing child pornography from an IP address registered to the University of Notre Dame.

An investigation found that the IP address was associated with Yuzhang Cui who lives at the Fischer Graduate Housing on Notre Dame's campus.

When investigators searched Cui's computer, they found hundreds of videos files depicting child pornography, including an hour long video depicting a young girl's rape.

"Some of the digital evidence we recovered, very graphic files, related to child rape and bondage, but some very extreme material," said Mitch Kajzer an investigator with the St. Joseph County Police.

It took about 13 days from when the child pornography download was flagged to the execution of search warrants and Cui's ultimate arrest.

"There seems to be a lot of it," said Kajzer when asked about recent child pornography busts in the area, "I think a lot of it is because we're very good at detecting this type of activity."

Kajzer says the internet gives people a sense of anonymity for this type of illegal and illicit activity, "it's a false sense of anonymity that they have. We're able to identify illegal activities on the internet like that and immediately act on it."

Cui is in custody at the St. Joseph County Jail on $50,000 bond. He'll be arraigned Thursday afternoon.
