NILES, Mich. (WNDU) - The Niles High School robotics program received a special grant Friday morning.

Robotics coach Karla Porter was surprised with a $1,000 check from Midwest Energy and Communications.

It costs roughly $15,000 a year to run the robotics program at the high school, and Porter and her students were extremely grateful.

"I was so surprised," Porter said. "We applied for grants because we have to fund ourselves for robotics. … This will help us tremendously. This is the biggest donation we received this year."

The grant money will go toward buying robotics parts and travel expenses.
