ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU)- A woman's estranged husband has been arrested after he drove her to a Steak 'n Shake parking lot with a gunshot wound. Police said he shot her in the chest.

Tuesday afternoon, police arrested James Lampson on attempted murder charges.

According to police the shooting happened Tuesday afternoon on Rivers Court in Cass County, in the Barron Lake area.

Police said the suspect drove the victim south into Indiana and stopped at the Steak 'n Shake parking lot on State Road 933. Police have not said why he stopped there.

Neighbors of Lampson said the couple was getting a divorce.

"They were always arguing, they didn't get along too well," said a neighbor. "My neighbor texted me and said 'you better get home your neighbor just shot his wife' and the minute he said that I knew exactly what was going on."

Because the shooting happened in Cass County and the suspect was arrested in St. Joe County, both Michigan State Police and St. Joseph County Police are working together on the case.

"Being a post at the state line, yes, we do deal with Indiana quite a bit and having to extradite people back and forth," said Trooper Jesse Binns of the Michigan State Police.

Neighbors said Lampson had gotten divorce papers about six months ago, but she served him first.

"I think she had come back today to pick up her belongings and something triggered hjm," a neighbor said. "He was getting more depressed, more depressed and more depressed. It didn't surprise me this happened."

According to neighbors, Rivers Ct. is a quiet street.

"It's been a very quiet lane, very quiet here and it'll continue to be that way," a neighbor said. "A little glitch won't stop our neighbors here. Everybody helps everybody."

The victim was transported to Memorial Hospital and is expected to survive.

Lampson is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail pending extradition to Michigan, where he faces attempted murder charges. He is expected to be sent back to Michigan on Wednesday.

The name of the victim is being withheld until the family is notified.
