Two teens appeared in court Friday in connection with the shooting death of a Ligonier man in South Bend last weekend.
Police first took into custody 17-year-old George Watson, Jr., and late in the day on Wednesday, arrested 17-year-old Qualan Jones. Both were arrested on preliminary charges for the murder of Felipe Gutierrez.
Gutierrez was found dead in the driver's seat of his car at LaSalle Park on May 20.
A witness, who was inside the car during the shooting, said Gutierrez went to the parking lot outside the Charles Black Center to buy an iPhone from George Watson, Jr. Apparently, the two had set up the sale through Facebook Marketplace. Qualan Jones and his brother drove Watson and another minor, D.B., to the parking lot. He stated Watson and D.B. were going to keep the phone and rob Gutierrez, the buyer.
Jones parked his Pontiac closer to the LaSalle Park Homes while Watson and the other person walked toward Gutierrez's BMW parked outside the Charles Black Center. The witness inside the BMW said two young black guys got into the backseat -- one was supposed to be selling the iPhone. Instead, the guy behind the witness demanded money at gunpoint. Apparently, the other guy in the back did not display a weapon. The witness said he handed his money over while Gutierrez went to get his gun from the driver's side door. Then, someone in the backseat shot Gutierrez. The witness said both men in the back got out of the car and ran North of the Charles Black Center.
Once Watson and D.B. were safely inside Qualan Jones' car, Watson told police D.B. had a gun. He remembered D.B. saying, "I don't know what just happened, I think I just killed him, I shot him." Watson then said D.B. brought a gun because "that's his mentality." He confirmed the gun belonged to another minor.
During the arraignment on Friday, preliminary pleas of "not guilty" were entered for Jones and Watson. They have initial court hearings on June 7 and June 8, respectively.
Charging documents indicate a 16-year-old minor was taken into custody on May 24 and is currently being detained at the Juvenile Justice Center. The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office filed a Petition Alleging Delinquency in juvenile court against this person for the equivalent of Assisting a Criminal, if an adult did the same crime.
Meanwhile, the Prosecutor's Office filed a Petition Alleging Delinquency in juvenile court for a 15-year-old. That equates to Murder, Felony Murder, and Robbery if the crime was committed by an adult. The 15-year-old has yet to be taken into custody.
