A man accused of killing a former Goshen councilman pleaded not guilty in court Thursday.

Cody Garman, 22, is charged with murdering David Swartley.

Court documents say the two met online after Garman saw Swartley's personal ad for a "casual encounter." They planned to meet up on the morning of Thursday, May 25.

Swartley drove to Garman's house and picked him up.

Garman told police they got in an argument and that he punched Swartley before driving to another area and leaving him in the car.

Garman was appointed a public defender. He faces a maximum of 65 years if convicted.

He pretrial is set for June 29, and the trial is scheduled to begin on September 18.
