UPDATE: Officials identify man found dead in car; Metro Homicide investigating

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) A man was found dead in a car in South Bend Monday morning, and the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit is investigating.

The man suffered apparent gunshot wounds, according to a release issued Monday night by the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office.

On Tuesday morning, the victim was identified as 21-year-old Ruben James Waters.

Police were called Monday to the 1300 block of West Washington Street for a welfare check after someone reported a suspicious vehicle.

Police thought the man was sleeping in the car, until they took a closer look. His death is being investigated as a homicide.

The homeowner of the house where the body was found says he didn't know the car or the person.

Neighbors say they hadn't heard or seen anything out of the ordinary, other than the car running in the driveway.

Officers at the scene were seen searching the ground. One officer said they were looking for blood spots.

An autopsy is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday in Fort Wayne.

Anyone with information that could aid the investigation is encouraged to contact Metro Homicide at 574-235-5009 or Michiana Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP.
