Man dies while in police custody in Berrien Springs

BERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. (WNDU) - A 51-year-old man died early Monday morning while in custody of police officers in Berrien Springs.

At around 1:24 a.m., officers were called to an address on West Union street for a property destruction complaint. The suspect, a 51-year-old man, was spotted in the area while officers were speaking with the caller.

A Berrien County Sheriff's deputy found the suspect in the Fifth Third Bank parking lot on Cass Street. The suspect resisted and had to be restrained by officers, according to a news release.

A short time later, officers called for an ambulance because the suspect was having a medical issue. The suspect was taken to the hospital where he died. His name is withheld until family is notified.

The Berrien Springs-Oronoko Twp. officer and the Berrien County Sheriff’s deputy have been placed on paid administrative leave, per protocol. The investigation is being referred to an outside agency.
