FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WNDU) A little boy in Indiana was beaten to death, and police believe his mother's boyfriend killed him.

Malakai Garrett and Mitchell Vanryn

According to our reporting partners at Ft. Wayne's NBC, it happened last week in a home in Ft. Wayne.

The little boy's father, Lantz Garrett, is from Warsaw and says he's heartbroken by what happened.

Police say two-year-old Malakai Garrett was being watched by his mother's boyfriend, Mitchell Vanryn, while his mom was at work.

Vanryn told police he had slapped the boy, trying to wake him up from a nap.

Once his mom came home, they eventually took Malakai to the fire station, he then went to the hospital where he died.

An autopsy showed severe bruising all over the 2-year-old's body.

“It shouldn't have happened to him and it shouldn't happen to any other baby, and there are a lot of babies out there that have been failed,” Garrett said. “And that's gonna be my point, there's gonna be some type of change.”

Garrett was concerned about the safety of his son and says he filed several times to try and get custody of Malakai.

Vanryn is charged with aggravated battery and domestic battery.

He'll next be in Allen County Court on Wednesday.

According to that autopsy, Malakai had severe bruising around his face and head, as well as his internal organs.

The doctor says those injuries were most likely caused by several punches.
