A local missionary was shot and killed Tuesday morning while working with his family in Cameroon, Africa.

The victim is Mishawaka native Charles Wesco, an older brother to State Representative Timothy Wesco.

Wesco and his wife, Stephanie, spent the last two years raising financial support and planning to move to Cameroon as missionaries.

About two weeks ago, they moved to Cameroon with their eight children after selling their home and possessions.

"He was really wound up about everything," said Wesco's mother, Rebecca. "He was really excited about everything and well, he is a hard worker."

Tuesday morning, Wesco was headed back from a shopping trip with another missionary and was gunned down while driving.

The details remain unclear, and Wesco's parents are concerned with getting his wife and children back to the US.

No official details on this international incident are available from the U.S. Embassy or State Department.

"My husband already prayed for his killer," said Rebecca. "Charles would want us to do that, he would."

"He cared for the people of the world and he was willing to risk his life to go to them," added Wesco's father, Virgil Wesco.

Even in this time of mourning, Wesco's parents say they find comfort in their faith.

"We know for certain he's in heaven, we don't have any shadow of a doubt," said his mother. "He had sins, but he had asked God to forgive him, and he really truly wanted to love God more than his very life."

NewsCenter 16's Tricia Sloma talked with Rep. Tim Wesco on Tuesday morning. He gave the following poignant statement about his brother and his family's loss: "He loved the Lord. He loved people. The Lord giveth. The Lord taketh away. Blessed be the name of the Lord."

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb released the following statement:

Janet and I are thinking of Representative Tim Wesco and his family as they grieve the death of his brother, Charles. We ask that all Hoosiers join us in offering prayers and condolences to the Wesco family.

The missions agency that handles the Wesco family's finances has set up a fund for Wesco's wife and children. If you'd like to help, visit
