Police have identified the driver who died after crashing into a tree in LaPorte.

It happened around 3 p.m. Thursday. Officers were dispatched to the 2000 south block of US 35 in rural Pleasant Township.

Investigators say a green 1996 Mercedes-Benz was traveling north on US 35 when the driver left the roadway for an unknown reason and hit a tree.

The driver was freed from the vehicle after a short period of time, police say. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was identified Friday as Joseph A. Freese, a 41-year-old from LaPorte.

According to LaPorte County Coroner Bob Cutler, Freese died as the result of "blunt force trauma." Toxicology test results are pending
