Dozens of kids were celebrating International Mud Day at the Woodlawn Nature Center in Elkhart.

They were making mud pies, mud ice cream, and even mud angels.

Coordinators say the free play in the outdoor classroom is a great way for kids to get outside and connect with nature.

But above all, have fun with dirt and water.

Mariah Grubert of Elkhart said, “It gives them a different way to play instead of playing with a bunch of toys that entertain them. It's a way for them to kind of use abstract play and come up with things on their own to play with. And they enjoy it.”

Don't worry, the kids had a chance to hose off before getting into the car.
