Indiana officer shot in the back by friendly fire

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (CNN) - We now know the identity of the police officer in Lafayette, Indiana, who was accidentally shot in the back by another officer on Tuesday.

Lafayette police said Lane Butler and another officer were investigating criminal mischief when a large dog jumped on the officer and caused him to accidentally discharge his weapon.

That bullet struck Lane in the back. She was wearing a protective vest at the time, but the bullet entered above the vest.

Lane is now recovering in the hospital. She's a three-year veteran of the department.

As for the officer who fired his gun, he's been placed on leave pending an internal investigation.
