Indiana cigarette tax hike likely not coming this year

INDIANAPOLIS (WNDU) - A cigarette tax hike is reportedly coming from the Indiana Statehouse eventually, but probably not this year.

A coalition of health and business leaders has been lobbying to triple the tax to $3 a pack, but the House rejected the idea, according to our reporting partners at News Now Warsaw.

No one at the Statehouse is willing to flatly pronounce the idea dead, but one lawmaker said it's unlikely to make a comeback this year.

One issue, according to lawmakers, is that it's not clear how the money from a cigarette tax would be spent.
