SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Dozens of students took advantage of the nice weather Friday to spruce up the South Bend area.
Nearly 100 college students from Indiana University South Bend and Southwestern Michigan College took part in several activities leading up to Earth Day.
The students helped remove invasive species along the St. Joseph River. The city of South Bend also donated some trees to plant near student housing.
The organizers said Earth Day is a good reminder of just how crucial it is to take care of the world around us.
"It makes us realize just how important the natural environment is to us," IU South Bend Honors Program Director Meovi Karakatsanis said. "How we need to protect that environment and take care of it in order for it to be sustainable."
Students also attended a lecture about taking care of the environment. Sunday, April 22, is Earth Day.
