A former school resource officer was arrested Friday on a charge of failing to report a rape.

Matthew D. Gilbert, 34, was a police officer with the South Whitley Police Department, and he also worked as the school resource officer at Whitko High School.

An Indiana State Police investigation found that Gilbert received information from a then-16-year-old female who said she had been raped.

This information was allegedly provided to Gilbert at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year, but there was reportedly no initial investigation or any follow-up.

The Whitley County Prosecutor's Office charged Gilbert with failure to report a rape or sexual assault, a class B misdemeanor.

Gilbert was incarcerated in the Whitley County Jail but has since bonded out. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

The ISP investigation came as the result of a complaint brought forth in February of this year.
