FDA halts sale of transvaginal mesh

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has ordered the sales of transvaginal mesh to be halted due to safety concerns.

The FDA said it "has not demonstrated a reasonable assurance of safety and effectiveness for the devices."

Each year, thousands of women undergo surgery on a condition where weakened muscles and ligaments cause the pelvic organs to drop lower in the pelvis.

If you had the mesh implanted already, the FDA says you should "continue with routine checkups." And if you have any complications, as always, notify your doctor.
