GRANGER, Ind. (WNDU) – The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team (FACT) is investigating after an elderly woman was killed in a collision on State Road 23 near Heritage Square Drive.

Authorities have identified her as Carolyn Woodyard, 82, of South Bend.

The two-vehicle crash happened just before 5:00 p.m. Investigators say Woodyard was traveling northeast on S.R. 23 attempting to make a left into the Martin's property at Heritage Square Shopping Center.

She allegedly turned left in front of a one-ton dump truck with trailer that was traveling with traffic, moving southwest, on S.R. 23.

Medics attempted to save Woodyard, who was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The driver of the dump truck, Anthony Kopriva, 32, was uninjured; the two other occupants of his vehicle were also okay.

Police say Kopriva is cooperating with the investigation. Witnesses also reportedly told police the truck driver was obeying all laws, including the speed limit.

FACT Capt. Tim Spencer said the area has seen multiple collisions.

"This is a high-volume traffic area," he said. "Left turns are always precarious, so always use caution when you're turning left."
