ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) - The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office has arrested a Goshen man in connection to a Tuesday morning hit-and-run crash involving a bicyclist.

Gerardo Fuentes Cortez, 49, of Goshen, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a serious bodily injury crash, the sheriff's office announced Tuesday afternoon.

Police were called to the scene just north of Nappanee around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.

A 17-year-old girl was riding a bike on C.R. 7 north of County Road 52 when she was hit by a vehicle traveling south on C.R. 7.

When police arrived, the vehicle was not around.

Police say evidence collected at the scene suggested the vehicle that hit the girl and left the scene was a black Chevrolet Cruze from between 2011 and 2014. It would have had damage to its front passenger side.

The 17-year-old, who was wearing a helmet, was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend by helicopter for treatment of back pain.

Anyone with further information on the incident is asked to contact the sheriff's office at 574-533-4151.
