Elkhart Co. Homicide Unit to investigate after body found during welfare check

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) – Elkhart County Sheriff's Office deputies responding to a welfare check on a person who was seen on the ground reportedly found that the person in question was dead Friday afternoon.

Police were called to a residence in the 15200 block of County Road 52 around 2:53 p.m., according to a release from the sheriff's office. A caller had alerted authorities that there was a person down in that area.

When deputies arrived, they reportedly found the person was dead and secured the scene, calling in the Elkhart County coroner.

Because it was not immediately clear how the person died, Sheriff Jeff Siegel requested the assistance of the Elkhart County Homicide Unit.

Siegel said there is no danger to the public and the scene is secure, but no further information would be made available at this time.

Following a preliminary investigation over the weekend, an update is expected Monday.
