MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WNDU) - The YMCA of Michiana has announced it will be closing the Edison Lakes Family YMCA facility at the end of March.
The closure is intended to refocus resources from the YMCA of Michiana toward "providing programs and services of greatest need to the community in collaboration with community partners," according to a release issued Wednesday.
The Edison Lakes facility, which opened in 2016, reportedly was not financially sustainable because it did not grow at the rate projected. The closure is part of a three-year strategic plan designed to "have greater impact in youth development and community wellness across Michiana."
"While it's always a difficult decision to close a facility, we are excited how this can grow the impact of the YMCA in our community," YMCA of Michiana Board Chair Bill Cerney said in the release. "The YMCA of Michiana has served our area for 137 years, and our planning efforts will help us make a stronger impact with more focused and intentional programs. We are working on ways to collaborate and meet the many needs for youths, teens, families and seniors."
Members of the Edison Lakes YMCA facility will be able to use the Riverview Family YMCA, which is about 5 miles away. The Edison Lakes facility will close March 31.
