Dowagiac man found dead weeks after going missing

PENN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WNDU) – A man who went missing from Dowagiac at the end of March has been found dead in Cass County.

Police had been searching for 78-year-old Larry Waldschmidt since he went missing March 27. He was considered endangered because he was an Alzheimer's patient who was insulin-dependent.

Officials say they believe he pulled into a residence on Kelsey Lake Street west of Decatur Road in Penn Township. The owners were not there when he arrived. Because the vehicle was parked in the driveway, it was not suspicious and he was not immediately found.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed to determine his cause of death.

Police say dozens of tips from around Michigan were received. Unfortunately, none led to finding Waldschmidt.

His family and the Cass County Sheriff's Office thanked everyone who helped in the search for Waldschmidt.
