Indiana State Police and the LaGrange County Sheriff's Department are conducting a death investigation after human remains were found in southern LaGrange County.
The discovery was made Sunday in a field in a rural area, according to a release issued by the Indiana State Police Tuesday afternoon.
The remains are of an unknown person, and due to decomposition, an immediate identification was not possible, police say. They plan to use DNA testing and an anthropological exam to figure out how the person died and his or her identity.
The ISP and LaGrange Sheriff's Department are being assisted by the LaGrange County Coroner's Office, Stroh Fire and Rescue, Indiana Search and Response Team and the University of Indianapolis Forensic Anthropologist Team.
