LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) An injured 8-week-old infant died Tuesday, and LaPorte County police say they've arrested the child's father.
Brandon L. Bottom, a 24-year-old from rural Michigan City, was arrested for neglect of a dependent resulting in death, a level 1 felony; aggravated battery resulting in death, a level 1 felony; and battery with death to a person under 14 years old, a level 2 felony.
Bottom was taken into custody Friday morning and remains lodged in the LaPorte County Jail on a cash-only bond of $100,000.
The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office was initially contacted by the Franciscan Health Hospital in Michigan City on Feb. 1.
Hospital officials explained that the 8-week-old was being transported to the Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago.
Local detectives began to investigate the infant's injuries.
On Tuesday, doctors determined that the infant had no brain activity. The child was officially declared dead at 11:41 a.m.
An autopsy was performed Thursday, and the child's death was ruled a homicide.
