ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) - Firefighters are on the scene of a barn fire in Elkhart County.

The homeowner was burning dead grass outside and went indoors to make a sandwich. When the homeowner returned outside, the barn had caught fire, Cleveland Township Fire Chief Rich Newman said.

The fire broke out just before 5 p.m. in the 29000 block of County Road 108, just north of Woodland Elementary School. At least five departments were called to contain the fire.

Some of the roads in the area are closed as fire crews work to put out the flames.

Crews are expected to remain on the scene for a couple hours.
