ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) Fire crews were called early Friday afternoon to a home in the 19000 block of Cowles Avenue in St. Joseph County.
When they arrived, the majority of the building was on fire.
A woman was home at the time and made it out safely with her two dogs.
Fire officials say she had no phone with her and spent about five to 10 minutes knocking on doors until she found a neighbor who could call 911.
Officials say quite a bit of damage was done to the home before crews arrived.
"With the wind and that time frame, the fire is going to triple in size about every 30 seconds because of what's contained in there," Fire Marshal Dave Cherrone explains. "So, when we got here, we're kind of behind the times and played catch up. But it's been under control for quite a while. They're just hitting some hot spots."
Crews will be able to get inside the home soon to begin the investigation into what caused the fire.
