MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WNDU) Emergency crews were at the scene of a boat explosion on Lake Michigan on Friday.
Three workers from the Michigan City Port Authority were hurt on a Port Authority barge. Alden Hopper, 65, Timothy Frame, 55, Daniel Hoepf, 34, all of Michigan City, sustained non-life threatening injuries from the incident when all were ejected into the water from the explosion. They were all wearing life jackets, which law enforcement says contributed to rescue efforts.
It happened at around 3:30 p.m. Friday near the mouth of Trail Creek, close to the Washington Park Marina.
The workers were bringing swim buoys from the lakefront to the creek for winter storage when the explosion occurred.
Two of the workers suffered leg and arm injuries, and the third was being treated for scratches.
The explosion is still under investigation, and crews are investigating whether fuel or other pollutants have entered the water.
