UPDATE: Metro Homicide investigates death of 1-year-old boy at Mishawaka apartment
The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit is investigating the death of a 1-year-old boy at Hickory Village Apartments in Mishawaka.
The call came in around 1:20 a.m. Saturday at the apartment complex, police told NewsCenter 16. Once there, police found the child unresponsive.
We have also learned that two women were living in the apartment with the baby. One of those women was the boy's mother.
Initially, the boy was taken to the hospital and put on life support, but he died early Saturday afternoon.
Unit Commander Tim Corbett says CMHU is working with the Department of Child Services and St. Joseph County Special Victims Unit on the case.
"Anytime we're called out, obviously, there's a little bit of a mystery to it, and that's why we're there now and trying to find out the answer," Corbett said. "We're not pointing fingers at anybody, but we will find the answer."
Corbett says search warrants have been issued.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday, Aug. 13, at 10 a.m.
