SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) The best and brightest South Bend has to offer were honored Tuesday with a reception by Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
Valedictorians, salutatorians, National Merit Scholarship finalists and more were given plaques honoring their accomplishments as proud parents looked on.
All eight South Bend high schools were represented.
As much as the ceremony is about rewarding good work, it was also a chance for the mayor to try to keep the best of the best in South Bend once these graduates join the workforce.
"South Bend has a lot at stake in whatever is next for you," Buttigieg said. "As you go on to college, as you go on to the workforce, we hope that even if you find yourself temporarily drawn away from this geography, that you'll consider coming home sooner or later, and even if you are somewhere else, that you keep South Bend in your equation."
Buttigieg went on to say that young people aren't just the future, they're at the center of big issues right now, and they don't need to wait to make a difference.
