Body recovered from St. Joseph River
A body was recovered from the St. Joseph River in downtown South Bend on Thursday afternoon.
Emergency responders were dispatched for a water rescue at around 2:30 p.m. at 320 E Colfax.
"Workers in one of the buildings thought they had seen a body floating in the river. Upon our arrival down here, with the fire department, it was indeed a body floating in the river," said Captain with the South Bend Police Department, Joseph Leszczynski.
By the time crews arrived, the call became a shore-based recovery.
"They were able to pull the person out of the river. At this time he is just an unknown male, white...Launched boats and got him out fairly quickly," said Coroner with St. Joseph County Mike Samp.
The deceased man has not been publicly identified.
At last check, there is no indication how he died.
"Because when a body is in the water, it's floating and hitting objects, so you can't make a determination of any kind of marks or anything prior to going into the river or after going into the river," Samp said.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday morning.
