Police are investigating after a body was discovered in a stretch of the St. Joseph River near the 400 block of Niles Avenue in South Bend.

Firefighters were training in the area around 4:37 p.m. when they discovered the body, dispatch confirmed.

Police at the scene said there was evidence the body had been in the water for a while. They believe the person was a man between the ages of 30 and 50.

Police told NewsCenter 16 it is too early to determine whether foul play may have been involved in the person's death.

"We could find no outward signs of trauma when we examined the body on just head-to-toe examination, but that's why we do have an autopsy," St. Joseph County Coroner Mike McGann said. "They will be more extensive as to any traumatic injury, at least in order to rule that out. And once that's ruled out, the [Department of Natural Resources] will be notified."

The body was removed from the river shortly before 6 p.m. Crews were also leaving the scene shortly before 6 p.m., and the East Bank Trail was reopened.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday in Fort Wayne.
