Berrien Co. police investigate suspicious death of 6-week-old baby

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. (WNDU) Police are investigating the suspicious death of a 6-week-old baby in Berrien County.

First responders were dispatched at 6:23 a.m. Thursday to a home in the 3900 block of Fikes Road in Hagar Township.

The call was for an infant who wasn't breathing.

By the time first responders arrived, the infant was dead. A man who says he's a family friend tells NewsCenter 16 he was at the home when he was awoken about the emergency.

An autopsy took place Friday, and police tell NewsCenter 16 that the pathologist who performed the autopsy wants additional information.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau is continuing to investigate.

The report will then be forwarded to the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office for review, which is customary in suspicious death investigations.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police, the State of Michigan’s Child Protective Services, and Pride Care Ambulance.
