Berrien Co. man dies after mistaking loaded gun for unloaded, nonfunctional

A man in Berrien County has died after shooting himself with a gun he didn't know was loaded.

The incident happened on the 3600 block of Fieldtree Road in Benton Township.

Witnesses told officers that the 20-year-old victim didn't know the gun was loaded, nor did he think it worked.

Police have not disclosed the man's identity.

Investigators said they do not believe foul play is a factor.
