ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) - St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit is investigating after a police chase ended in an officer-involved shooting Monday morning.

Around 4:30 a.m., St. Joseph County police, Walkerton police and La Porte County police assisted North Liberty police in a high-speed pursuit of a suspicious vehicle with stolen plates.

During the chase, the vehicle drove through multiple farm fields in the area of State Road 23 and Leeper Road in Liberty Township.

The suspect rammed police vehicles with his car shortly before his vehicle and a Walkerton police car were engulfed in flames. The field surrounding them, located west of S.R. 23 and south of Leeper, caught fire as well.

Police fired shots at the suspect's vehicle, after which he was taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Officers removed the suspect from the engulfed vehicle.

Officials say the suspect is expected to survive gunshot wounds.

Multiple officers were treated for smoke inhalation.
