Area judge wins award for public service
An area judge has received the 2018 F. Jay Nimtz Award for his exemplary public service throughout the community.
The award was created in Nimtz's honor, as he dedicated his life to serving the community.
This year's recipient was Judge Roland Chamblee Jr., who has given his time quietly without seeking attention.
In fact, during Monday's ceremony, he said when the city reached out to him to be a candidate, he said there had to be other people more deserving.
"When people ask me to do something, I do what I can," he said. "I hope that it's helpful to the community and I move on. I don't expect to do anything other than to give my best, and I'm disappointed when I can't."
Chamblee is the 23rd recipient of the award. He has dedicated countless hours to community foundations and the South Bend Housing Authority.
