Penn High School is hosting an active shooter training session Monday morning.

Participating departments want the public to know that the training is a drill. People should not mistake the police presence for an actual emergency.

The exercise is a joint effort between the St. Joseph County Police and Mishawaka Police. Participating agencies include the Penn Township Fire Department, Clay Fire Department, Mishawaka Fire Department, St. Joseph County Emergency Management, Memorial Hospital, Elkhart General Hospital, St. Joseph Medical System, South Bend Fire Department and more.

Training starts 9 a.m. and should last up to several hours.

It is meant to evaluate response plans in the event of an active shooter during an after-school-hours event.

The last full-scale training was in 2013.
