Pet Vet: Avoiding dog bites

Every year, almost five million people are bitten by dogs and require millions of dollars of medical attention.

Our Pet Vet, Dr. David Visser join NewsCenter 16 Kim Shine to discuss ways to avoid bites, and create good canine citizens out of our dogs.

Dog Owner Responsibilities:

Carefully select and socialize your new puppy or dog
Avoid threatening situations
Neuter and vaccinate
Provide basic obedience training

Protecting self/family from dog bite

Never leave child alone with a dog
Watch for dangerous situations
Teach children to be pet-safe

Dog Bite Checklist

Obtain proof of rabies vaccination, owner's contact information.
Clean bite wound ASAP
Consult your doctor or visit the E.R.
Contact the dog's veterinarian to check vaccination records.
