Tennessee man arrested for attempting to steal firetruck

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A man is in custody after attempting to steal a fire truck on Callahan Road.

The incident occurred Thursday afternoon at 2:29 p.m. when Thomas Treadway jumped in the driver seat of a Rural Metro fire truck as first responders investigated a possible burglary at 906 Callahan Road, home of Premier Gymnastics.

Rural Metro captain Richard Conley observed Treadway get in to the truck (valued at $250,000) and put truck in drive trying to steal it. Firefighters removed Treadway and detained him until officers took him into custody.

Authorities say Treadway appeared to be intoxicated, and he said he had meth the previous day. Treadway told authorities he believed someone was chasing him, and broke into several businesses before trying to steal the fire truck.
