2 hospitalized, dog killed in moped-pickup truck crash near Wakarusa

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) – Two men were transported to the hospital after a crash between a moped and a pickup truck near Wakarusa that also killed a dog Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened around 4:31 p.m. near the intersection of State Road 19 and County Road 38, about a mile north of Wakarusa city limits, according to a release from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office.

Henry Wrightsman Jr., 47, of Elkhart, was riding a moped westbound on a private road and approaching S.R. 19 when he reportedly entered the road. A 2002 Ford pickup truck driven by 48-year-old Kelly Lewis, of Osceola, was heading north on S.R. 19. and tried to swerve to avoid the crash but hit the moped.

Wrightsman was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries to his head and legs. Lewis also was transported to the hospital for treatment of nausea.

A dog belonging to Wrightsman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police continue to investigate the crash.
