ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) – Authorities confirmed a 15-year-old died after being shot in Elkhart Friday night.

Police responded to the shooting in an apartment complex in the 52000 block of Brookstream Circle around 8:30 p.m. Friday.

“...And there was like two police cars, an ambulance, and cops just came from everywhere," said neighbor, Maddison Lancaster.

While family members said the teenager was shot in the chest, authorities have not been able to confirm this information.

The death of the teenager, who has not been publicly identified, is being investigated by the Elkhart County Homicide Unit.

Thus, they have yet to release information on the cause and manner of death.

Neighbors at North Lake Apartments said the shooting came as a surprise.

"Very surprised. We've never seen anything like it...It was a whole bunch of teenagers drinking, and they were playing with a gun and one kid accidentally shot it off," Lancaster said.

"And another person said they saw the guy crying," said another neighbor, Mercedezc Morrison.

"The kid that shot the gun ran," added Lancaster.

Again, this is strictly testimony from neighbors.
