SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) An 11-year-old girl was taken to the hospital after she was hit by a car on Lincoln Way West in South Bend.

It happened early Tuesday afternoon near the intersection with Allen Street.

Officials say the girl was trying to cross Lincoln Way West on a bike, saying she was trying to get away from other children.

Police say the girl had a cut on the back of her head and was alert when she was taken to the hospital. She had no serious injuries beyond the head laceration.

The driver of the car tried to stop short of hitting the girl who came out in to the street but was not able to. The driver, who was headed east, stopped at the scene following the collision.

Lincoln Way West was temporarily blocked between Allen and Sherman.
